The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic data for June showing that demand rose by 5.2% compared to the year-ago period. This was up slightly from the 4.8% increase recorded in May.

Five years after its launch, NASA’s solar-powered Juno spacecraft arrives at Jupiter. With only one opportunity to get into orbit, Juno will spend 53 days around the gas giant. Its mission is to collect data and images that could offer traces to the origins of our solar system and the formation of the planets and moons.
Swiss psychiatrist and balloonist Bertrand Piccard took off this morning from New York, in the first attempt to get a solar-powered plane across the Atlantic Ocean. The flight will be the first transatlantic solar and electric crossing with zero fuel and zero emissions.

Lower oil prices helped the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to revise the industry projected profits to $36.3 billion for the year. IATA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Tony Tyler, said that “lower oil prices are certainly helping — though tempered by hedging and exchange rates. In fact, we are probably nearing the peak of the positive stimulus from lower oil prices. Load factors are at record levels. New value streams are increasing ancillary revenues.”

The Federal Aviation Administration has raised the unmanned aircraft altitude authorization from 200 to 400 feet. This will permit flights at or below 400 feet for unmanned aircraft operators with a Section 333 exemption for aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds and for government unmanned aircraft operations.
